Computer powers on but nothing happens

I see this a lot and it can be one of the hardest things to diagnose – why won’t my computer boot up?  Basically it can be one of many things but if you follow the steps below you will at least be going in the right direction.

1. Did you change something or update software the last time the system was working?  If so try going into safe mode (Windows) or a command prompt (Linux) and undo the changes.

2. Are there any beep codes?  If so read the motherboard manual to see what the problem is.

3. Open up the case and check that all connectors are firmly in place and reseat the memory and graphics cards.  Before you open up the case wear an anti-static wrist band, or touch a piece of metal, to get rid of any static you might have.  If you don’t you could fry the insides of the computer.

4. Try booting up the system with only the bare minimal hardware required.  So disconnect any usb or firewire connections encase the problem lies with one of these.

5. Change over the power supply.  Even if you think that the power supply is working it could be that it is not producing enough power to boot up the system.

6. Remove the memory and replace it with a stick that you know works.

7. Try booting up the system without any memory installed.  If there is a loud continuous beep then your motherboard is ok.  If there is no noise whatsoever then your motherboard is toast.
