How to make a bootable Linux USB Stick

ComTech: IT Support Stirling

Have you ever thought about making a bootable Linux USB stick?  If so you are in luck as today I will show you how.  Being able to boot Linux off a USB stick is invaluable when you are trying to recover data off a Windows system that has crashed.  Yes you could use a live CD but what happens when the system does not have a CD/DVD drive?

For the purpose of this tutorial I will be using Linux Mint 12 as my base system however the commands should work on all major distributions.

To install any Linux distribution onto a USB stick we need a package called UNetbootin. Open up a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install UNetbootin

Once installed open the package and you should get the screenshot below.

Unetbootin gives you two options for the disk image.  You can either download one of the preinstalled images available or you can select the path to your own.  As you can see above I have selected the path to my Linux Mint 12 image.

You also need to make sure that Type is set to USB Drive and Drive is set to the location of your USB stick.

UNetbootin will now install the image to your USB stick and make it bootable.
