How to set up a New Certificate Request on Exchange Server 2010

ComTech: IT Support Stirling

Today I will show you how to set up a new certificate request on Exchange Server 2010 from a trusted third party certificate authority.  For the purpose of this tutorial I will be using Exchange Server 2010 installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 system.

Open up the Exchange Management Console (EMC) and click on Server Configuration. Then in the Actions Pane click on New Exchange Cetificate to start the wizard.

Enter a friendly name for your certificate (for example Comtech_Cert1) and then click Next. On the following page you will be asked if you want to configure Wildcards for Domain Scope.  Just click next.

Now you get the chance to specify what you want the certificate to cover (for example OWA).  Expand the options and tick the boxes where required.  For the purpose of this tutorial I will set the certificate to cover Outlook Web App (shown below).

The next page of the wizard will ask you what domains should be covered by the certificate. Make sure all the domains you want covered (for example mail.comtech.com) are present in the list.  If not add it!!

The next page will ask you for your Company Information and the location to save the request file to (and what you will call it).  Fill in the fields and click next.

On the final page review your selections and then when happy click New.

The request file will now be created and saved to the location you specified.  Open up the file (shown below) and copy the code as this will be required when you request the certificate from the trusted third party certificate authority (ed Digicert).
