I was watching Breakfast yesterday morning on BBC 1 while getting ready for work. On it they had a mother and daughter who used Twitter and Facebook amongst other social networking sites on a daily basis. The challenge was what information could a person who had never met them find online. The results were impressive to say the least. This person was able to find out their full names, addresses, hobbies, what holidays they were planning and so on. This got me thinking what information about me is online and how easy would it be for someone to get hold of it?
So I opened up Google and typed in my full name and then the shock started. Within 10 minutes I had my address and my wifes name. I then expanded the search to include the place where I live. Now I came across my occupation, company details, number of kids, wifes occupation, date of birth, where I studied in university and my age. Not bad for 15 minutes searching!!!
Now I use a lot of social media for business and this means I am very visible online. Being very visible also means it is very easy for someone to obtain information about me so after this little experiment I updated all my privacy settings on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIN. If you use a lot of social media you might want to do the same.
So give it a go. Type your name into Google and see what comes up!!
