The curse of the mobile phone

Mobile phones are great!! They allow us to access our files, take pictures and access the internet from anywhere so why then is this blog titled “The curse of the mobile phone”? The answer is simple – what happens when you lose them?

To illustrate this point I will explain what has happened to me over the last week or so.  I have a Blackberry Bold 9780 which I use for work and personal use.  All my emails come to this phone along with my texts.  All my contacts are stored on the phone (in the internal memory as it turns out) and of course I have my apps.  The phone is backed up to the PC using Linberry so I shouldn’t lose anything.

One day I put my phone in my pocket and went to see a client and when I pulled it out the screen was completely white!!  I could not see anything so I tried pulling the battery and gently touching the screen.  Nothing.  Bugger!!

The phone is insured so that was not a problem.  The problem was I couldn’t see anything on the screen to make any calls, texts or emails and the voice activation on the phone doesn’t like my Welsh accent!!  To make it worse the phone was also on silent mode (no idea how) so I couldn’t even hear when it was ringing.

And here in lies the curse.  The mobile phone has become so immersed into our daily lives that when something happens to them we are completely lost.  When they get damaged or lost we are unable to contact the people we need to and the problem increases when it is your works phone.  By the time I managed to get a cheap unlocked phone of ebay (Blackberry 8700v) I had lost 5 days!!!

I can’t access my contacts as they are stored on the internal memory of the old phone.  I haven’t lost them as I have my backups but that is not much comfort when you are looking for your clients number.

So to cap mobile phones are great except when you lose them, damage the screen, unable to access contacts or drop it down the toilet!!

Do you agree?

How to tether your Blackberry Playbook to your Blackberry Phone

Today I will show you how to tether your Blackberry Playbook to your Blackberry phone.  Once completed this will allow you to use your phones 3G connection through your Playbook.

For the purpose of this tutorial I will be using a Blackberry Bold 9780 and a Blackberry Playbook on OS 2.0.1.358.

Ok first step is to turn on bluetooth on both devices.  Now on your Playbook go to Settings – Bluetooth and click on Add New Device.  Once the phone has been found add it.

Now go to Internet Tethering and your phone should appear on the screen under Select a Bluetooth device to tether to. Click on it.

You should be asked to select a wireless service profile for your internet connection. In the search box type in your carrier (mine is vodafone uk) and click add profile.

On the next screen you will be asked for a username and password for access to the internet.  Leave the defaults and click connect.

You will now see some information on tethering charges.  If you already have a data plan with your phone then there will be no extra charges (unless you go over your allowance).  Any data used comes off your monthly data allowance.  Have a read and then press continue.

The system will now authenticate and then you should receive a message : Your tablet is now connected to the internet.

How to speed up your Blackberry Bold 9780

I had this issue last night.  My Blackberry Bold 9780 was slow, unresponsive and generally a pain to use.  So today I will show you how I managed to speed up the phone.

For the basis of this tutorial I will assume you are on OS 6.  If not the first thing to do is update your phone to OS 6 via Blackberry Desktop Software.

1. Close all Applications that you are not using. When you close an application it still runs by default in the background.  To fully close it down do the following:

  • Press and hold the Blackberry Option key
  • Click the application to open it again
  • Click the Blackberry Option key and select close

2. Turn on automatic memory cleaning.  When this is enabled your phone will clear the following when the screen dims – address book cache, certificate search etc

  • Navigate to options – security – advanced security settings – memory cleaning and enable memory cleaning

3.Clear the event log.  By default your phone will store all the ‘events’ – basically anything your phone does.  To view and delete the log do the following:

  • Hold down the ALT key while typing lglg (lowercase)
  • Click on the Blackberry Option key and select clear log

And that is it.  Once your phone is restarted you should notice the difference.
