How to use your Blackberry internet connection through your computer

Today I will show you a handy little tip on how to use your Blackberry internet connection through your computer.  This comes in very handy when you don’t have an internet connection on your desktop PC or laptop but you do have 3G on your phone. Any data you use will come out of your existing phone data plan so you shouldn’t incur any excess charges (unless you go over your data allowance).

For the purpose of this tutorial I will be using a Blackberry Bold 9780Linberry Blackberry Desktop Manager for Linux and Linux Mint 12 but the steps work on all Linux Distributions.  For Windows users you will need to use Blackberry Desktop Software to accomplish the same task.

First thing to do is connect your phone to your computer via its usb cable.  Then we need to download Linberry and install it.

Now we need to click on the ‘Use your Blackberry as a modem to surf the internet” icon (bottom left).

On the next page read the information and then click proceed.

We will now be told that your Blackberry phone needs to be restarted (shown below) so click on Restart my Blackberry

On the follwoing page (shown below) follow the instructions on how to reconnect your Blackberry to the system when it has restarted.

On the next page click Connect.

Your phone will now authenticate with your data carrier and in a minute or so you will be able to access the internet on your computer.

WORD OF WARNING Your mobile data plan is designed for use on your phone.  If you start accessing the internet through your computer you will use up your data allowance a lot quicker than you usually would.

Blackberry Desktop Software for Linux

I have been searching for ages looking for Blackberry Desktop Software for Linux.  You see RIM decided in their wisdom not to support Linux when developing their Desktop Software and only go with Windows and Mac OS.  Thanks guys!!

Then today I came across a piece of software called Linberry.  And voila my search is over.

Linberry allows you to backup your phone or Playbook to your desktop PC so if you lose your phone you don’t lose your contacts or everything else on it.

So what else can it do?

It can also restore your phone from a previous backup.

You can also install and uninstall applications to your phone.  Just download the application to your PC and then upload it to your phone.

You can also view your entire contact list on your PC too!!

Last but not least is the option to use your phone as a modem to the internet.  This would come in very handy if you happen to be in some remote place (i.e Scottish highlands) and quickly need to access something online.

Just a quick note.  If you do decide to use your phone as a modem then be aware that your data allowance will be used up quicker than normal when using the internet on either a desktop or laptop.

Linberry is still in Beta at the moment and the developers are hoping to add more features in the near future but personally I think this is a very good start.

How to speed up your Blackberry Bold 9780

I had this issue last night.  My Blackberry Bold 9780 was slow, unresponsive and generally a pain to use.  So today I will show you how I managed to speed up the phone.

For the basis of this tutorial I will assume you are on OS 6.  If not the first thing to do is update your phone to OS 6 via Blackberry Desktop Software.

1. Close all Applications that you are not using. When you close an application it still runs by default in the background.  To fully close it down do the following:

  • Press and hold the Blackberry Option key
  • Click the application to open it again
  • Click the Blackberry Option key and select close

2. Turn on automatic memory cleaning.  When this is enabled your phone will clear the following when the screen dims – address book cache, certificate search etc

  • Navigate to options – security – advanced security settings – memory cleaning and enable memory cleaning

3.Clear the event log.  By default your phone will store all the ‘events’ – basically anything your phone does.  To view and delete the log do the following:

  • Hold down the ALT key while typing lglg (lowercase)
  • Click on the Blackberry Option key and select clear log

And that is it.  Once your phone is restarted you should notice the difference.

Blackberry Desktop Software

If you own a Blackberry then you need Blackberry Desktop Software. Imagine iTunes for Blackberry without the ability to download apps and you wont go far wrong.  It can run on any versions of Windows and Mac.

The best ability of Blackberry Desktop Software is the ability to sync your files, so if you lose your phone or the software becomes corrupt you can restore the phone without a second thought.  Very handy.

So what exactly can you do with Blackberry Desktop Software?

1. Backups

You get the ability to encrypt your backup file, set passwords to access the backup files, specify the location to save to and set up a scheduled backup.

2. Ability to sync and organise your files

You can choose which organizer data to sync (for example address book, calendar etc) and choose which settings to configure.

3. Sync all your music, pictures and videos

4. Restore your phone to factory settings

If the unthinkable happens then you do have the option of restoring your phone to its factory settings or even restoring from a backup.

There you have it.  I have given you a quick insight into Blackberry Desktop Software and what it can do.  If you do decide not to use it then remember what a friend said to me last week – Chris what happens if my phone will not switch back on?
