Computer keeps randomly shutting down

This is a common one I see a lot of and is usually caused by overheating.  The steps to rectify the problem are as follows:

1. Check to see if the fan is working.  Can you feel heat being discharged? Can you hear the fan cut in?  If it is not working then replace the unit.

2. If the fan is working the next step is to get your hands on some compressed air.  You will use the compressed air to unclog the heat sink which sits above the CPU.  On a desktop you open up the case and the heat sink is visible but on a laptop things get a bit trickier.  Locate the area where the hot air is being discharged and use the compressed air in short bursts to clear any blockage.

3. If using the compressed air didn’t work it is time to replace the heat sink.
