Is social media good for business? Hard question to answer this as it all depends on what you are looking to get back. Is it sales, exposure, contacts or something else? It is true that you can spend hours blogging, tweeting, facebooking (is that even a word?) and not achieve what you set out to do or you might get the exact opposite. If you do intend to use social media then I would suggest you take a look at the following three types:
1. Twitter
Twitter is fantastic at finding out what is happening right now. From a business perspective it is a great way to interact with your customers and allowing you to network from the comfort of your own office. Personally I find that Twitter is great for making business contacts. It allows you to build up a working relationship which in turn leads to work.
2. LinkedIN
LinkedIN was designed to allow you to manage your professional profile online. It allows you to show your qualifications and experience while also making connections to people that you know. The beauty of LinkedIN is the recommendations. The more recommendations you receive the more work that will come your way through the medium of ‘word of mouth’. Mixed in with Twitter LinkedIn is a very powerful business tool.
3.Facebook
Facebook is great for telling people what you are doing and organising your life. From a business point of view I have found that the Facebook business page is very limited and should not be relied on for generating customers. That is not to say that Facebook does not have its place but personally I would say your time would be better spent with Twitter or LinkedIN or both.
The best advice I can give, before you try any social media, is decide what you are trying to achieve. Once you have this then you can dip a toe into the world of social media.
