The curse of the mobile phone

Mobile phones are great!! They allow us to access our files, take pictures and access the internet from anywhere so why then is this blog titled “The curse of the mobile phone”? The answer is simple – what happens when you lose them?

To illustrate this point I will explain what has happened to me over the last week or so.  I have a Blackberry Bold 9780 which I use for work and personal use.  All my emails come to this phone along with my texts.  All my contacts are stored on the phone (in the internal memory as it turns out) and of course I have my apps.  The phone is backed up to the PC using Linberry so I shouldn’t lose anything.

One day I put my phone in my pocket and went to see a client and when I pulled it out the screen was completely white!!  I could not see anything so I tried pulling the battery and gently touching the screen.  Nothing.  Bugger!!

The phone is insured so that was not a problem.  The problem was I couldn’t see anything on the screen to make any calls, texts or emails and the voice activation on the phone doesn’t like my Welsh accent!!  To make it worse the phone was also on silent mode (no idea how) so I couldn’t even hear when it was ringing.

And here in lies the curse.  The mobile phone has become so immersed into our daily lives that when something happens to them we are completely lost.  When they get damaged or lost we are unable to contact the people we need to and the problem increases when it is your works phone.  By the time I managed to get a cheap unlocked phone of ebay (Blackberry 8700v) I had lost 5 days!!!

I can’t access my contacts as they are stored on the internal memory of the old phone.  I haven’t lost them as I have my backups but that is not much comfort when you are looking for your clients number.

So to cap mobile phones are great except when you lose them, damage the screen, unable to access contacts or drop it down the toilet!!

Do you agree?
