Are you a command line or GUI person?

Are you are command line or GUI person? Here is a question that only a few years back any self respecting Linux person would probably have said command line because to be excepted within the community you needed strong command line skills.  Times are changing however.

Ubuntu and its derivatives have brought Linux to the masses and they have done it in such a way that you don’t have to use the command line anymore to get things done.  Unless you want to that is.  There are now users who tend to stay away from the command line and use the GUI’s to configure almost every aspect of their systems but there are probably as many people who choose to use the traditional way and edit configuration files using vi or some other text editor.  Neither of these ways is wrong and neither are they right.  Personal choice is wonderful isn’t it!!

Dont be fooled though that it is only Linux where you can use the command line as Microsoft is starting to push Powershell within Windows Server.  As Linux is starting down the path of less command line Windows is going the other way.  Now there is something I thought I would never see!!

So back to the original question – are you a command line or GUI person?

Me I tend to do a bit of both.  I am equally happy moving files around the directories using the command line as I am clicking icons on a screen.  If I get lazy I do tend to use GUI’s more but if I really want to have a play then editing configuration files through a text editor (my personal favourite is nano) is my first choice.  Just be sure you know what you are editing first!!

So over to you.  Command line or GUI?
